ICPC, NUC shut down 41 ‘Illegal’ Varsities

The ongoing reforms in tertiary institutions got a boost yesterday as the Independent Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) announced the closure of 41 out of the 67 universities whose operations were yet to be regularised. The action was the result of collaboration between the ICPC and the National Universities Commission (NUC) in carrying out systems review of the universities.
It is the first time such a large number of higher institutions will be closed down. Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the ICPC Chairman, Mr Ekpo Nta, said the properties of the 67 universities have been seized. The agency has also arrested the owners. He said that prosecution of the proprietors will be carried out accordingly. Represented by one of his commissioners, Prof Olu Aina, the ICPC boss said: “In keeping with its warning delivered by the chairman last week, ICPC has today commenced a nation-wide operation to seal the premises of identified illegal universities, seize their properties, make arrests, prosecute and execute such other actions it deems fit.
“This action is the first in the series of implementing the outcome of an ongoing ICPC/NUC University Review Study and Review for which ICPC sought and obtained a Federal High Court warrant to crack down on illegal degree-awarding mills in Nigeria,” he said. The ICPC however, refused to disclose plans by the commission to cater for the well being of the students of the universities who’ve spent millions of Naira in securing admissions. “The order we got from the court permits us to freeze the accounts of these institutions. Where the student qualifies to gain admissions into universities, we will help them in getting such. We don’t have money to refund to such students,” Nta affirmed.
Nta said the exercise will end this week. “About 100 people have already been positioned in nine zones of the country. There are 67 of such universities involved and we’ve the addresses of 41 of them. Section 37 of the ICPC law empowers the commission to carry out such functions,” he added. “An inter-agency task team, compromising of ICPC, the NUC, Police, the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigerian Security Civil Defence Corps will continue the exercise until all corrupt practices associated with the physical existence of such illegal institutions cease completely.

Girl Stabs Her Rapist To Death In Self Defence in Ibadan

MAY 5, 2013 was Onyinyechi Orakwuelum’s 18th birthday. The day she became an adult and the day she allegedly stabbed to death 19-years-old Akinwale Ayobami, who she said wanted to rape her.
Onyinye, who is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, pending investigation, narrated her story to Tribune and she said:
I am from Nkwele Ogidi in Anambra. I finished from Saint Gabriel Commercial Secondary School, Mokola, Ibadan, in 2011.

The deceased (Ayobami) was my mate in secondary school, as well as my friend Funmbi.
My parents moved to our personal house at Ologuneru community in Ibadan, so I lost contact with my friends. One day, my mother came home and told me that she saw my friend, Funmbi, and that they had also moved to Ologuneru. I was happy and we reunited.

She later gained admission into a university. In April this year, she came to me and asked if I remembered Ayobami, who was popularly called Ewizzy. She said they chatted on facebook and that he told her that he was also living at Ologuneru, and had asked her to meet him at a junction so that she could know his place.

I told her that I could not recollect the name so she went alone.
The next time she wanted to go there, she asked me to follow her. I initially refused, but she persuaded me. We got there and saw him. His girlfriend was also there, lying on a couch. We relived our secondary school days and he later requested for my number since we were living in the same area. I gave him.

We left and not too long after, he called me, saying that he had been calling Funmbi’s number but it was switched off. He said he wanted to know if I had got home. Funmbi was beside me then so she also answered because her phone battery had gone flat by then.

Since then, I did not hear from him, though there was a day I missed his call, but I could not call him back as I had no credit on my phone.
On my birthday on May 5, I went to help a lady in our neighbourhood after coming back from church. When I checked my phone later, I saw Ayobami’s call among others that I had missed.
I called him back and while chatting, I told him that day was my birthday. He congratulated me and said it was worth celebrating. I told him I was only marking it.

He asked where I was and I said Ologuneru, he then asked me to join him at Ologuneru junction. I went there at about 7p.m. and I saw him come out of a beer parlour. I didn’t know that he was already drunk.
On getting to his apartment, he took me through the back door. When I asked why, he said the lock on the front door was bad so he locked it with a padlock.
I told him I preferred to sit outside because it was pitch dark inside. He opened the front door and I went in. We put on torchlights.
I made a call to a friend while he was busy on his laptop. Later, he made a call to his mother.
We started discussing about school days again and he then went to the kitchen and offered me water. I told him I was o.k. and he went into the kitchen again.
It was at that point that Onyinyechi said the story changed. She narrated further:
“He came back and locked the front door with a padlock. I asked him why he did that but he just sat beside me and said he wanted to date me. I even thought he was joking, and I replied that ‘is that what we came here to do?’ but he told me he was very serious.
As he moved closer, I perceived a strong smell of alcohol, then I knew he was drunk.
“I asked again: ‘AY, are you drunk?’ he replied that he was not drunk, saying he meant what he said. I told him I could not date him and he replied that if I could not date him, then he must made love with me before I leave.
I told him to open the door for me to leave but he said I was not going anywhere. I started pleading but he did not yield.
“The next thing he did was to pull off his trousers and I knew I was in trouble because I could see he was aroused. He told me I could see that he was in mood for sex and that he must have his way.
I opened the sliding window screaming ‘somebody, please help me!, Somebody, please, save me!’. He came there, slapped me, drew me back and locked the window.
I started running round the sitting room and he was pursuing me.
“He went to the kitchen and brought a knife, warning me not to waste his time.
He threatened to do something nasty to me if I did not yield to him after counting from one to 10.
He had said before that he loved his mother so I begged him in the name of his mother, he did not yield ground.
I begged him in the name of God but he said he left God a long time ago and that he was serving Ogun. He showed me the picture of a bird hanged on the wall and said that was the symbol of his god.
I also told him I was having my menses but he said I should allow him to do what he wanted to do, saying that if his friends should meet me in the house, they would take their turns with me.
He lit a cigarette and started smoking. He started his countdown but I knelt and was pleading. As he got to eight, I screamed the more but he rushed at me and started struggling with me to remove the bum shorts I was wearing underneath my long dress.
In the process, he dropped the knife, and at that moment of intense fear, I picked the knife and waved it at him in the darkness. The next thing I heard was Yee! O ti gun mi (Oh! You have stabbed me).
I stood up, shivering. I searched for my phone because the entire place was in topsy-turvy.
Throughout the struggling, no one responded among his neighbours, though he had earlier said that no one would respond to me as they regard the occupants of his flat as ‘Dons’ who are dreaded.
“I reported at home and we went to the police station to report. By the time we got back to the house, he was dead. It was in the morning that it was seen clearly that the knife pierced his heart.”
Sunday Tribune gathered that the deceased’s mother had been so distraught about his death that she had been calling for justice to be done to her son’s killer.
She was said to be separated from the boy’s father and had remarried and given birth to other children while Ayobami was the only child she had for the father.
Police investigations also revealed that the man Ayobami was living with in the flat was not related to him.
Reacting to the story, the Assistant Commissioner of police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, ACP Dasuki Galadanchi said the matter was still being investigated.
There is no witness yet to support the suspect’s story. On the side too, dead bodies cannot talk. There was no witness on the side to corroborate whether there was an attempted rape or not.
In line with the police strategy of the Inspector General of police which encourages openness, transparency and accountability, we will go deeper into investigations and get to the root of the matter. If she’s found culpable, she’ll be charged to court accordingly. We are for justice.

Jilted Man Killed Girlfriend, Sleeps With Her Dead Body In Ogun State

A 25-year-old bricklayer, Akinloye Anuoluwapo, has been arrested by the police for slaughtering his 21-year-old girlfriend, Rafiyat Akinyemi. Anuoluwapo slit Akinyemi’s throat at her family home in Magbon, Ogijo, Ogun state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Anuoluwapo allegedly murdered Akinyemi for her refusal to continue dating him. An OND graduate of the Lagos State Polythenic Ikorodu, Akinyemi was said to be home alone last Wednesday, when Anuoluwapo came calling.

It was gathered that the embattled lovers, who had dated for over a year, split up late 2012 despite attempts by Anuoluwapo to prevent it. It was learnt that Anuoluwapo knew that Akinyemi’s mother and siblings usually left the house before8am each working day,. He subsequently sneaked into Akinyemi’s family home at about 8.30am on the day of the incident. As expected, Akinyemi was alone. Anuoluwapo was said to have madeseveral attempts to have sex with Akinyemi.

Anuoluwapo, who is being detained at the Ogijo Police Division, said, “I don’t know what came over me, I just wanted us to reconcile and continue our relationship. “Each time we break up, I am always severely affected; I converted from Christianity to Islam because I wanted to marry her. “I even moved from my one-room apartment to self-contained accommodation so that she would be more comfortable. My visit was meant to be for a discussion but it degenerated into a quarrel. “Akinyemi was not even aware that I had a knife on me when I forcefully had sex with her.”

The police said Anuoluwapo used the knife to cut Akinyemi’s throat and later had sex with her while shebled. But the estranged lover claimed thatshe was still alive when he had sex with her on the couch in the sitting room. Unknown to Anuoluwapo, some neighbours had seen him while he was sneaking into the house. It was gathered that Akinyemi’s corpse was discovered at about 4pmby her mother and siblings when they returned home. Although neighbours suspected Anuoluwapo, none of them initially came forward with information. A police source said, “It was later, someone gave an anonymous tip to the police that Akinyemi had brokenup several times with Anuoluwapo. “He said each time; Anuoluwapo would get people from her community or the mosque where she worshipped to plead with her.”

No one knew where Anuoluwapo lived or worked. He had recently relocated from his home at Segun Kehinde Street, Ogijo to the PZ estate. In a bid to locate Anuoluwapo, police detectives were said to have picked residents who lived around Akinyemi’s home for questioning. Eventually one of the residents was said to have revealed Anuoluwapo’s place of work. “A team of police detectives went tothe company to arrest Anuoluwapo, but were initially refused entry. Eventually the Divisional Police Officer, SP. Toyin Afolaogun, had to come with the Divisional Crime Officer before Anuoluwapo could be arrested,”

The source said. A frightened Anuoluwapo was said to have immediately confessed his guilt upon questioning and led police detectives to his house wherehe had hidden the murder weapon. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He said, “The shirt which Anuoluwapo had worn to Akinyemi’s house on the day of the murder was found hidden in a corner with blood stains on it. The knife was found in his home. “From our investigations, Akinyemi was already dead when Anuoluwapo had sex with her. When her corpse was discovered, her legs were still spread apart and they had become stiff. Semen too was found on her private part. Akinyemi’s body was discovered exactly the way Anuoluwapo had left it when he was through.”

Imo police smash baby factory, nab impregnator, rescue 17 pregnant teenagers

Imo State Police Command recorded another success in its renewed fight against crime and criminals, following the bursting of child trafficking and baby factory syndicate in the state.
Disclosing this to newsmen Thursday evening, at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, said the Command has clamped down on illegal motherless babies homes, as well as rescued 17 pregnant teenagers. (Some of the pregnant teens pictured above)
According to the Imo police boss, one of the illegal homes, Ahamefula Motherless Babies Home, located in Umuaka, Njaba local council area, is allegedly owned by a middle aged woman simply identified as “Madam One Thousand”.

Mr. Katsina equally disclosed that during the police raid, no fewer than 11 minors, who were possibly waiting to be sold to prospective buyers, were rescued by the Command.

The bizarre aspect of the police finding was that a 23-year old boy, simply identified as Oyibo, was fingered as being responsible for impregnating the expectant girls, whose ages ranged between 14 and 17.

Apart from being in varying stages of pregnancy, the girls who equally looked malnourished and not properly catered for wept uncontrollably as they were paraded by the police in Owerri.

On how the Command burst the syndicate, the Commissioner explained that the illegal babies home was successfully raided by the “Ambush Squad” after a credible tip-off.

“The prime suspect is now at large. She was was producing pure water sachets as a decoy to deceive unsuspecting members of the public about what was really going on in the premises”, the Commissioner of Police recounted.

Continuing, Mr. Katsina said: “When the police invaded the tightly secured compound, 17 minors were seen holed up in different rooms in the large compound with some of their children playing around”.

The Imo police boss equally paraded the 55-year old security man, Mr. Uzoamaka Okoli, from Nempi, Oru West local government area of the state, employed by the fleeing owner of the babies home.
The 23-year old Oyibo, who was equally paraded by the Commissioner, has allegedly confessed to being responsible for all the pregnancies.

Nigeria Fighter Jet Crashes In Niger, Two Killed

A Nigerian warplane crashed in Niger yesterday, May 6th, from where it was conducting military operations in neighbouring Mali, and the two pilots were killed, Nigeria's army said in a statement.

The fighter jet was part of Nigeria's air fleet engaged with an African force battling hardline Islamists in Mali. An army source in Niamey said it had suffered a "mechanical" problem.

"A Nigerian Air Force Alpha jet aircraft on a non-combattant mission crashed today at Dargol village...The two pilots on board the fighter jet died," the Nigerian defence headquarters said in a statement.

The jet is one of four Nigerian aircraft based in Niamey as part of of the Africa-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA), it said, adding that the crash was being investigated.

French and Chadian planes and US drones have used the Niamey airport as a base for their operations in Mali.

The 6,000-strong AFISMA has taken over the lead from France in supporting Mali's army in the battle against Al-Qaeda-linked extremists.

A French-led operation launched in January drove the Islamists from key cities they had seized in northern Mali. But the Islamists have turned to suicide bombings and guerrilla attacks in reclaimed territory.

AFISMA will eventually be incorporated into a 12,600-strong peacekeeping force, following a UN resolution in April.

BF Article: Facebook can make you mentally ill

It has just been discovered that Facebook and other social networking sites may affect your mental health by causing psychotic episodes and delusions, researchers warn.

As Internet access becomes increasingly widespread, so do related psychopathologies such as Internet addiction and delusions related to the technology and to virtual relationships, according to the study.
Computer communications such as Facebook and chat groups are an important part of this story, said Dr Uri Nitzan of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Shalvata Mental Health Care Center.

According to Nitzan, patients shared some crucial characteristics, including loneliness or vulnerability due to the loss of or separation from a loved one, relative inexperience with technology, and no prior history of psychosis or substance abuse.

In each case, a connection was found between the gradual development and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, including delusions, anxiety, confusion, and intensified use of computer communications.

The good news is that all of the patients, who willingly sought out treatment on their own, were able to make a full recovery with proper treatment and care, Nitzan said.

While technologies such as Facebook have numerous advantages, some patients are harmed by these social networking sites, which can attract those who are lonely or vulnerable in their day-to-day lives or act as a platform for cyber-bullying and other predatory behaviour, he said.

All three of Nitzan's patients sought refuge from a lonely situation and found solace in intense virtual relationships. Although these relationships were positive at first, they eventually led to feelings of hurt, betrayal, and invasion of privacy, said Nitzan.

"All of the patients developed psychotic symptoms related to the situation, including delusions regarding the person behind the screen and their connection through the computer," he said.

Two patients began to feel vulnerable as a result of sharing private information, and one even experienced tactile hallucinations, believing that the person beyond the screen was physically touching her.

I Wish My Mum Married Someone Like Dangote – Doris Simeon

Why do you concentrate more on Yoruba movies?
I have done a couple of English movies. But I do more of soaps and TV series. But there is a new movie, The Nanny, in which I played the lead character. But I still do English movies.
How did you become a part of the Yoruba movie industry?
I actually started with Papa Ajasco and Co. I went for the auditioning. My purpose for going wasn’t to get auditioned. I went there to see if I could sight some stars and mingle with them. I never had in mind that I would get auditioned. But fortunately, I was given a script to audition and I did well. I met a director on that set and he was the one that brought me into the Yoruba movie industry.
Do you remember the first movie you featured in?
Yes. The title of the movie was changed twice. But funny enough, the movie wasn’t released early enough and some other movies I featured in after it came out before it. When it was eventually released, I think the title was Ten Million Naira or something like that.
When was this?
This was in year 2000. The Papa Ajasco sitcom I featured in was in 1999. I have stayed some time really.
Did you think, back then, that you would get to the level of playing lead roles?
Sincerely, it wasn’t my goal. I wanted to be behind the camera. When I was coming up and I saw how fans almost mobbed my senior colleagues, I had a rethink. I said I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. I would rather wish that people would know the name and not the face. But I was told it didn’t work that way. I also realised that you make more money being in front of the camera than being behind it. I decided to go for it. I didn’t plan it this way but I thank God. In everything you have to thank God.
But you have started producing your movie, why?
It is not about trying my luck being a producer. It is not every time your luck will shine. It is about what you have inside and also the passion you have. You would want to do something people would appreciate and learn from and not only to get entertained. But it is not only actors that produce movies, directors also produce movies and even act in the movie. It is just what you have inside you and you don’t want it to die so you try and explore it. Money can come out of it, yes but let the passion be the drive for becoming a producer.
Talking about money, we hear that the Yoruba movie actors are paid peanuts…
That is what most people will always come up with. But this industry is not about fixed prize. We have our different ways of negotiating. It all depends on the way you carry yourself. If you want to do for me and I do for you, nobody will query you. If you want to do a job and collect your money, that is also fine. This is not a salaried job that anybody will sack you or tell you he won’t pay you at the end of the month. If they pay them so fantastically well in the English movie industry, most of them wouldn’t have gone into producing movies as well. It is about choice.
Do you have a fixed amount you charge?
No, I don’t.
Can you tell us the highest amount you have pocketed?
Hmm… let it be inside my pocket. But I am comfortable and I thank God for that. I am good.
Why do you reject scripts?
At this point in my career, there are some scripts you would read and try to advice the producer especially when it has the potential of tarnishing the image of the actors. If you can’t go with my advice, I reject the script. I have been building my career for a long time. I wouldn’t want to do a movie and I tarnish this image I have been trying to build in a good way. So if the script to me is not what people would wish to see me in, I reject it.
Actresses in Nigeria live above their means, do you do same?
I don’t do that. I am myself. You have to accept me the way I am. I don’t do things to impress anybody, no policeman will arrest me. But I have some other businesses I am doing. I want to venture into TV presentation and some other stuff. I don’t bite more than I can chew and that is a fact.
How was growing up?
It was fun. It was just the typical Nigerian child growing up. We were told not to watch TV but read our books. During my time, parents wanted their children to be doctors and lawyers and engineers. But fortunately, my parents were free minded. I told them I wanted to be a news caster or a radio presenter. I used to watch TV a lot. There was a day my mother beat me black and blue. She sent me on an errand and I went and got the wrong thing because I was watching Indian movie in my neighbour’s place. My parents gave me their blessings. They supported me. One woman was so angry with my mother and asked her how she could allow me to become an actress. She told my mother that actresses sleep around and all that. But it was that same woman that came back years later and was begging my mother that her niece wanted to be an actress and my mum should help her talk to me to help her.

What kind of home did you grow up in?
I came from a polygamous home. We fight and settle and fight again and settle. It was so much fun. Now, I remember all we did and I laugh. My parents were wonderful, God rest their souls.
  So your parents are late?
Yes. I am an orphan. I am actually looking for an orphanage where I can move to if they have a bed space for me. (laughs). I miss them a lot anyway.
Every young girl will always remember her first boyfriend, do you remember yours?
I remember that I did ‘shakara’ a lot when I was growing up. ‘Toasting’ then was just writing letters. But when I was growing up, the guys I liked never asked me out. The ones I didn’t like would always flock around me. I don’t think I remember having a first boyfriend. It was actually when I started acting that I started having boyfriends. But afterwards, those ones I liked started coming and I told them it was too late. There was this guy, in his mind, I was his girlfriend. He came to Lagos for his youth service. He used to take me out to eateries. So I would say he was my first boyfriend but we didn’t date. We didn’t even kiss.
Why?
He said he was very patient and he would wait for me till I was ready.
So who eventually became your first ever boyfriend in the real sense?
He is in the UK. We dated for two years. I was grown up then and I realised that I couldn’t stand distant relationship. He liked surprising me. He would come around and wouldn’t tell me he was coming. He is still based in the UK.
A lot of people may think you are arrogant…
I thank God that I am not. I had parents that brought me up in a great manner. My mum was a very beautiful woman and sometimes, I asked her how she got married to my father. I would ask her why she didn’t marry somebody like Dangote. She would tell me that if you have a fine face and you don’t have a good character, nobody will come after you. I don’t take life so hard. When you die, it will all be vanity. It is better you are humble and be yourself. Your lifestyle has to be decent.
But you should feel bad that your marriage didn’t work out few years after you got into it?
There is always time to be happy and time to be sad. There is time to reflect and think and learn from your life. You make mistakes to learn. You don’t make mistake and go back to it or dwell in it.
But will you get married again?
Hmmm. I don’t know what to say. I am not taking life so hard. You don’t say some things when you are happy because you might regret it. I want to go the way life goes.
But are you in a relationship again?
Yes. I am in a relationship with God and my son. Is God not male? My son is also a man. He is my boyfriend now.

Would you say it was your fault that your marriage broke up?
I just thank God. I thank Him for everything.
How do you cope with the scandal your marriage generated?
You have to accept life the way it is. At least I am alive and people talk about me. Some people are alive and they are not known. Even if I die today, people will talk about me.
What if your ex wants his son back?
He is his son. It is not all the kids that you train that will remember you. You just do your own and leave the rest to God.

What is your greatest desire?
I won’t say I want to be like God, but I want to touch lives. I want to make an impact so that people will never forget me.
What if your husband comes back to you and begs you for forgiveness?
I leave it to God. (sings) I am married to Jesus, Satan leave me alone…
But you look so happy…
I am so happy. Do you know that one of my colleagues died recently? I am older than Bisi Komolafe and she is dead now. I can provide for myself. Why should I be sad? That is why I am not taking life so hard. You don’t know when you can slump and die.”

Fake Architect “dupes” Church Members Over Pastor Adeboye Project

A Man named Opeyemi Oluwole, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly using a building project proposed by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, to dupe people to pay money in his bank account.

Pastor Adeboye had announced during the church’s December Holy Ghost Service titled ‘Signs and Wonders’ that the church had a challenge of accommodation.

He had said, “The dormitories we have are many but are not enough for the number of people that attend our programmes so we need people to join us in building extra 2,000 dormitories in order to reduce the number of people sleeping on bare floor in the church auditorium.

“The dormitories, we are hoping, would be ready before the next congress and anyone willing to help should get across to us.”

According to police authorities, Oluwole, under the pretext of building the dormitories for the church, tricked many people into paying money into his bank account.

Our correspondent learnt that the monies collected from victims ranged from N250, 000 to N2.5m.

It was learnt that the suspect however ran out of luck after he approached a member of one of the parishes of RCCG.

It was learnt that the member immediately reported the matter to the Ketu Police Division.

The member, who craved anonymity, said the suspect had told his victims that he had been given the contract by the RCCG to build the dormitories.

He said, “Oluwole approached me, saying he had been given the mandate to build the dormitories and that some companies had bid for the contract. He said some of the companies that won were not financially capable of constructing the dormitories so he was sub-contracting it.

“He said we would handle the contracts but would have to use the names of the companies that originally won the bid and we would get our money afterwards. He gave us his bank account number and told us to pay N250, 000 as the initial fee for registration.

“However, I contacted the Project department of the RCCG and they said they did not give Oluwole any contract. They even checked past records and his name did not appear in the files.”

When the police wrote the RCCG headquarters, the church denied knowing the suspect.

In a letter addressed to the police, the church’s legal department stated that it was ready to pursue the case to a logical conclusion.

The church also stated that it was not possible for building project to be executed without the knowledge of the project department.

The suspect however denied the allegation, insisting that he had indeed been given the contract by Pastor Adeboye to construct the dormitories.

He said, “Baba (Adeboye) told me to go ahead with the dormitories. The agreement was verbal and there is no written document. Some people gave me money for the drawings of the buildings. Others loaned me money.”

Oluwole alleged that he and Adeboye had entered into a secret arrangement on the building project without the knowledge of the church authorities.

A police source, who craved anonymity, said the suspect was arrested a few weeks ago but was later granted bail.

The suspect however absconded soon after, making it difficult for the police to carry out investigations.

The  police were however able to re-arrest him last Friday.

Our police source said, “After granting Oluwole bail, the best thing for him to have done was to go to the church and explain his predicament. We even offered to take him to the church’s Chief Security Officer, who would have taken him to see Adeboye.

“However, after some weeks, we did not hear from him again. He even moved out of his apartment.

When asked why he jumped bail, Oluwole said, “My house was dilapidated and I had to leave the place so that it would not collapse on me.”

When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the police had taken the matter to court.

Comedian AY Defends Nollywood Actress Chioma Chukwuka

Apparently Vanguard's reporter Yemisi Suleiman, Chioma Akpotha and Comedian AY were all on the same flight back to Lagos where they went to attend AMMA Awards. Yemisi and Chioma got into a fight. Today Vanguard published their own side of the story, but Comedian Ay is saying the story is quite different. Read both stories after the cut.

Vanguard Writes...

Like most Nollywood stars, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha is not given to pretence. She’s always ready to vibrate and return fire-for-fire.

Last Sunday evening was not different. Following the frustration and exhaustion that greeted everyone after the AMAA awards and the endless wait at the Port-Harcourt International Airport, Chioma boarded the evening flight back to Lagos, however something happened!

Vanguard reports that a quarrel ensued between Chioma and a Lagos based female journalist, Yemisi Suleiman (who was trying to interview her), which caused the actress to loose her temper in a manner that attracted the attention of everyone on board.

Chioma claimed that the journalist was rude to her, adding that most painfully, she “called me Igbo bitch and all that’. I wouldn’t blame her because AMAA brought us together. I can conveniently pay her salary,” she fumed.

A colleague of mine just said and I quote "I think Chioma needs to work on her anger issues especially in public...you will recall that she was the same person that disgraced herself even with fellow stars at the Gulder ultimate search for celebrities a few years back."

AY Writes...

Recalling what happened between Chioma Akpotha and Yemisi (The Vanguard reporter) on the AMAA flight from Port Harcourt, one would have expected a cultured woman to be contrite and apologize forthwith, since everybody is error-prone. I crave your indulgence to say this not because the former is a movie star and the latter a journalist. More so, I dread not to raise my voice for the truth and my compassion against injustice.

It was quite unfortunate to read a report from today’s Vanguard Online in favour of Yemisi (their staff), as against Chioma Akpotha who was publicly insulted alongside every Igbo speaking individual on that flight, by Yemisi. Besides, if some of us do have the franchise to suffer disharmony with our personal values, I still want to believe that in reporting a case, Professional Journalism should keep it quite professional by not identifying with any side in an issue of this manner. But this is obviously not the case of the Vanguard reporter who wrote the story between Chioma Akpotha and Yemisi. The reporter in question has proven to me that fiction can sometimes make a better job of the truth and an exaggerated relativism.

How could you in every sense of professionalism start a story involving your fellow reporter and Chioma Akpotha by saying “Like most Nollywood stars, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha is not given to pretence. She’s always ready to vibrate and return fire-for-fire. Last Sunday evening was not different. Smarting from the frustration and exhaustion that greeted everyone after the AMAA awards and the endless wait at the Port-Harcourt International Airport, Chioma boarded the evening flight back to Lagos, determined to cause another stir on board”.

Determined to cause another stir on board? I am 100 per cent convinced that even a blind reader could perceive that your biased and fully loaded rifle was well targeted at the Nollywood actress from the very beginning of your report. My dear journalist (the almighty one with the ability to make and kill the career that was given by God), what happened to being objective and giving equal space to all sides in your news gathering?

So the best you could do to justify your false report was to hide the identity of the Vanguard reporter by concluding thus: “A quarrel ensued between herself and a Lagos based female journalist, which caused the actress to loose [sic] her temper in a manner that attracted the attention of everyone on board. But for the fact that she was on board, the visibly angry Chioma would have done the unexpected.

She claimed that the journalist was rude to her, adding that most painfully, she “called me Igbo bitch and all that’. I wouldn’t blame her because AMAA brought us together. I can conveniently pay her salary,” she fumed.  Who cares!”

Now would you really like to know who cares? AY cares! And yes I was on that same flight like many other industry people including a good number of foreigners who flew in to be a part of AMAA 2013.

The poor Chioma only succeeded in getting her multiple visa of becoming a “lousy bitch” when Yemisi was brushing through the president of Eko International Film Festival, Mr. Hope Obioma Opara. She was obviously in a hurry to make the exit when the flight touched ground. All Chioma said to her was “take it easy they are yet to open the exit door”.

She brushed her way through to two other ladies who sat in front; the next word that came out of her mouth was “lousy Igbo girls”.  Apparently, Chioma heard what she said and asked “did you just refer to me as a Lousy Igbo girl? The best response from your Yemisi was “what if I did?” (I am so sure she wouldn’t ask an Angelina Jolie or a Kim Kardashian that same question if she were to be on the same flight with any of them).

Perhaps she would have started twitting immediately, saying “AMAA things…. Kim just asked me to take it easy, they are yet to open the exit door. Wow wow wow 2013 my year of exit opening doors”). But definitely not to a Nollywood multiple awards winning happily married actress with kids. Chioma Akpotha, Grace Ama, and Nollywood producer Chinwe Egwuagu were still busy playing catch-up with Yemisi when she went on target again like the Boston Bombers to launch another verbal bullet.

This time she called them ‘LOUSY BITCHES’.

Chioma Akpotha managed to get off the bomb scene through the help of some of us who were on hand to stop the detonation of further bombs by Yemisi. Not even knowing she was a journalist from The Vanguard Newspapers, Chioma said “I will allow my God to fight you. It’s even possible that it is an Igbo person that is paying your salary. I wouldn’t blame you because AMAA brought us together. I am sure that I can convincingly pay your salary”.

For your information, Chioma Akpotha did not deserve all she got from your colleague ‘Yemisi’, whom you have proudly disguised or baptized to become a Lagos based Journalist. Who knows? Maybe by tomorrow “Miss Lagos based Journalist” could go through another baptism of fire to become “According to a reliable source”, all in the name of bringing down a fellow creation to the excitement of your colleague who ought to go to God and ask for forgiveness.

I hope she did not forget to let you into the corrective measures I gave to her? I am not a fan of anyone with uncultured attitude and public display of visible arrogance. Kindly ask her to remind you, so that I will not fail to be on your list of the next set of career-killing candidates. Or should I tell you the opinion of others concerning Yemisi on that same flight?

I guess there won’t be any need for that, because I am very sure of us having many more LOUSY BITCHES cut across the Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Ghanaians, South Africans and Americans on that AMAA flight. I would intentionally skip the question of the speedy hibernation in tribal cocoons, which is indeed unfortunate even as we try to push for a more detribalized mindset. (Please don’t mistake me for an Igbo man or take it that I am fighting for my “IGBO LOUSY BITCHES”. I am a full-blooded Yoruba Man like Yemisi)

Finally, my dear Madam Yemisi, kindly permit me to point out that contrition is a sign of strength, not weakness. To my “Amiable honorable I must defend my colleague till death”, I would like to plead with you in your capacity as a widely followed public reporter, to kindly grant objectivity its rightful place in your reports.

‘A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.’ But three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth. May we bear in mind that the Internet and social media have come to stay. We now have millions of followers who would at least hear our own side of the story before we are judged or criticised.
