17-Year-Old Spends Eight Years In Jail For ‘Wandering’
It was a moment of joy recently for the mother of a prison inmate that had been awaiting trial since 2005. Mrs. Maria Emmanuel danced and shouted with joy on the court premises of the Lagos High Court, sitting in Igbosere when Justice Deborah Oluwayemi released her son, Paul Samuel.
Five other awaiting trial inmates were also released by the court. They included Fatai Amidu, Adebayo Owuade, Gabriel Samuel, Mike Ofoje and Lawal Karimu.
Speaking with Daily Sun, Mrs. Samuel, a police corporal at Egbe Idimu Local Government Area (and whose husband is a retired soldier), said she had tried all efforts to cause her son to be released from prison – all to no avail. She noted that her son was not arraigned since he was arrested at Maryland, Lagos, in 2005 and had been awaiting advice from Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) since then.
According to her, she pleaded with her colleagues at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba where her son was first taken but regretted that nobody, including her senior colleagues, was able to help her.
“When I went to Alagbon Police Station, no one could help me. They said it is because he was an armed robbery suspect. I did not go to any senior police officer to help me.
“These past eight years have been terrible for me. I was fat before but if you now look at me today, you will see that I am thin. I could not eat or sleep; I was worried, thinking and crying even in the office. I was running around for my son’s release.
“This was compounded by the retirement of my husband from the Nigerian Army due to his legs, which were affected during the January 2002 bomb blast at Ikeja Cantonment in Lagos. He can’t work anymore and he has gone to stay in Bayelsa where we hail from. I am the only one struggling for everything,” she said.
She stated that all her efforts to get her son out of prison were futile until she met a lawyer, Ahmed Kazeem-Adetola from a non-governmental organisation, Prisoners Right Advocacy Initiative.
Unable to contain her happiness over the new developments on the court premises, she enthused: “I am so happy. I have not started to dance. I want to praise my God. This is the eighth year that I have been fighting for my son’s freedom. I will call my husband to tell him the good news.”
Her son, who was 17 years old when he was arrested was to be arraigned over a charge for armed robbery in the name of another suspect, who also bears Paul Samuel but who had been arrested in 2010.
Fortunately, his lawyer was present in court. His lawyer was able to clarify issues to the court. The court released him on the ground that he had been in prison without trial over the alleged offence of armed robbery for eight years.
Reliving the incidents that led to his imprisonment, Paul vowed to be careful about his choice of friends. According to him, all he did was to greet a friend and he ended up in prison. He noted that the ‘friend’ bailed himself out without looking back to see how he fared.
“On a Sunday morning, I was on my way to Maryland when I saw a friend and we greeted. I shook his hands and suddenly, the police came to raid the place and they arrested everyone they saw. They took everyone to Panti.
“I could not contact my family to come and bail me out and I didn’t have money. Many of those people I was detained with bailed themselves out with money. But those of us that didn’t have money were left and they charged us before a magistrate court for robbery.
“They dumped us at Kirikiri Prison and later I was transferred to Ikoyi Prisons where I was taken to Maximum Prisons.
“It is saddening to know that I was in prison for eight years over a charge of robbery without any trial or anybody showing up as complainant in the case. One of the things I have learnt now is that I will be careful of who I choose to be my friend,” he said.
However, Paul is hopeful that life after imprisonment would be better because he learnt how to make shoes and sandals in prison. He says he wants to make use of that knowledge and to also organise seminars for people to know how to make shoes.
“At least, I learnt how to make leather shoes, slippers and sandals during those eight years. I want to be making shoes and I will be lecturing people on how to make them.
“When I was there, as a devout Catholic, I attached myself to the church. That was where I was able to get good food and clothes. Prison food is horrible. It isn’t easy to be in that place for eight years without freedom, good food, clothes and even sex!”
Reacting to the development, Paul’s lawyer, Kazeem-Adetola, noted that the problem of prison congestion stemmed from the Federal Government, Ministry of Justice and the Nigerian police. He said his organisation had been working hard in the past two years for the release of inmates, who had been awaiting trial for many years without trial.
“We have filed fundamental human rights applications, press releases, letters to the Inspector-General of Police and the Ministry of Justice but these are not enough. We could try Habeas Corpus but the government, the police and the justice ministry need to sit up and do the right things.
“For instance, in this particular case, Paul Samuel’s file was mistaken for another’s with the same name. If they had done a thorough job, they would have seen that this Paul was arrested in 2005 while the other one was in 2010.
“Filing applications takes time and the court may award paltry sums as compensation so we filed an application for 106 inmates and we can safely say today that 90 people have been released.
“Filing fundamental rights application may be misconstrued as an avenue to get money, so we have decided not to file such now,” he said.
Easter: Security On Red Alert In Northern Nigeria
Our investigations also reveal that even Lagos State in Southern Nigeria is on red alert as well, following last week’s discovery in the area of arms, and the arrest of some suspected terrorists alleged to be nationals of Chad and Niger Republic.
States with stepped-up anti-terrorism activity in the North include Kaduna, Kano, Plateau states, aside Borno and Yobe.
Pointers to plans by Boko Haram sect to strike during the Easter period, according to another a source, come from yesterday’s discovery of bombs and weapons in Kano and the arrest of some Boko Haram members close to a military post in Kaduna.

Meet A Former Model Who Has Had More Than 330 Cosmetic Procedures & Operations
Former English glamour model Alicia Douvall has had more than 330 cosmetic procedures and operations – far outstripping American Cindy Jackson, usually credited with being the world’s most surgically-enhanced woman.
Since her first breast augmentation when she was just 17 – and she has had 16 such operations – the former model and mother of two has undergone six nose jobs, 11 operations on the skin around her eyes, surgery on her cheeks to add and then remove implants, and a facelift. She has also had a rib shortened to give her a slimmer silhouette, her toes shortened ‘so they looked better in heels’, a tummy tuck, bottom implants and chin implants which were later removed.
The 34-year-old claims she had spent up to £1 million on these and other cosmetic procedures such as injections of Botox and fillers, telling surgeons she wanted to be ‘perfect;’ ‘I took a Barbie doll to one medical consultation to show them exactly what I was after.’
'Now I know the problem wasn’t with my breasts or nose, but how I saw myself. But they always agreed that they could improve me.'
Alicia is said to be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), also called dysmorphia. A mental illness linked to anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, sufferers obsess over their appearance and have a distorted perception of the way they look.

Man realises he has 7.5cm knife lodged in his back three years after he is stabbed
Next time you have an unexplained itch on your back check to see if there’s a knife embedded there… One Canadian man didn’t notice he had the sharp instrument lodged in him for more than three years.
Billy McNeely reportedly suffered the injury following a fight at an arm wrestling match in April 2010 where he was stabbed five times with a 7.5cm knife.
He has subsequently had the instrument removed but when he initially went to the hospital three years ago he was not given an x-ray.
He returned with constant discomfort but was merely told he had nerve damage.
It wasn’t until recently when he got his nail caught on the top of the blade did his girlfriend notice it.
‘I told Billy: “There’s a knife sticking out of your back”,’ his other half Stephanie Sayine said.
‘I was scared. I was ready to pull it out with tweezers.’
Mr McNeely, from the Northwest Territories, added he used to set off metal detectors when in prison.
‘I’ve done some jail time in the past,’ he said.
‘The guards rub over you with a metal wand detector, and every time it hit my back… it went off.’
Mr McNeely is weighing up whether to sue his local health division.

Police to begin seizing cars with tinted windows
Driving in Lagos with tinted windows is against the law but some people do it because they get away with it. But not anymore says the Inspector General of police. He has directed state commissioners of police to start seizing cars with tinted windows and prosecute the car owners henceforth .
The directive is contained in a statement issued by Frank Mba, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, today in Abuja
“Police Officers nationwide have been directed to commence a massive operation aimed at enforcing all existing laws bordering on tinted glasses and the use of unregistered/unlicensed vehicles. This unbecoming attitude has the capacity not only to heighten criminal activities but to place unnecessary pressure on security agencies and law abiding citizens
The IG wishes to remind Nigerians from all walks of life, including politicians, military and security personnel that the ban on unlawful and indiscriminate use of tinted glasses and legislation forbidding the plying of unregistered vehicles are still in force. He wishes to clearly state that the Nigeria Police will no longer tolerate few misguided Nigerians who abuse the use of tinted glasses and unregistered/unlicensed vehicles. Similarly, owners of unregistered/unlicensed vehicles are advised to immediately register them and obtain appropriate licences or withdraw them forthwith from public roads,” the statement read

Car Airbag Killed A 6 Year-Old Girl in Delta, Asaba
Chizurum Emmanuel, a 6 years old girl, died on her way back from school when her mother who was driving the car, got involved in an accident.
Guardian reports that she was in the car with her three brothers. This is how the accident happened:
What was supposed to be a happy homeward journey ended in tragedy when an impatient motorist suddenly tried to beat the vehicle in her front, a Toyota Corolla at the U-turn opposite St. Patrick’s College. In an attempt to avoid hitting the car, the driver suddenly stepped on the break pedal. A panicky Mrs. Emmanuel attempted stepping on her break pedal, too, so as not to collide with the car in her front but it was too late.
Tried as she could, she still lightly hit the bumper of the vehicle, and then the airbag burst. She heard a noise and the car, an Audi saloon screeched to a halt. She turned to her right and saw the only daughter in a family of four children who was sitting in the front seat writhing in pains. The Primary Two girl had a cut on her neck and was bleeding profusely from the nose.
She was rushed to the nearby Federal Medical Centre (FMC) which was just a few meters away from the scene of the accident. They tried resuscitating her with oxygen but sadly, few minutes after she was brought in, she gave up.
According to her father, Chizurum was an intelligent and obedient girl who never got in anybody’s way and always took the first position in her class.
A source at the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), however, explained to Guardian that the airbag must have expired, as the impact of the accident couldn’t have been serious enough to trigger off the airbag. He added that it was advisable to check a car’s airbags 10 years after installation.
Parents and guardians are advised not to put children under `12 years old in the front passengers seat. May her soul rest in peace.

46-Year Old Mr Eze Okoro Shot Dead By Police In Front Of His House
Eze Okoro, a 46-year-old man
in Lagos was allegedly shot dead by drunk Nigerian Police officers recently in
front of his house at 1, Oguntolu Street, Ijaiye, Ojokoro area, Lagos State,
southwest Nigeria. But
the police have denied taking part in his murder.
The policemen
had been drinking for about six hours at a hotel nearby before they gunned down
the man while he was enjoying evening breeze in front of his house after work .
After shattering his waist with bullets, the policemen who were said to have come from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, forcefully took his corpse away, perhaps to cover up their heinous act and dumped it in a mortuary at Yaba.
The policemen took him to Yaba after the Ikeja mortuary officials insisted that before his body could be deposited there, they must fill certain forms, which they refused.
According to Okoro’s wife, Mrs Ugo Okoro, her husband, who is a businessman, returned from work on the fateful day, and because there was no electricity supply, they went and relaxed in front of their house to enjoy some breeze before going to sleep.
She said their family friend, Chinedu Nwanu and his wife, Nneka Nwanu, who is heavily pregnant, also joined them outside.
Ugo said it was not up to five minutes after she left them and went into their apartment that she heard gun shots and the residents started running in all directions.
She said while the commotion was going on, she heard her husband, who was wearing a pair of shorts and simple shirt, shouting that he was not a robber and was explaining to the policemen that he was just relaxing in front of his house.
“Nneka also fell down and started shouting that she was pregnant and showing the police her husband who was beside her. She was allowed to leave with her husband and one of the policemen shot my husband in the waist and he died on the spot,” Ugo narrated.
Sources told P.M.NEWS that the team of policemen had arrived a popular hotel in the area beside Okoro’s house in a Sienna bus with registration number KJA 280 BD and were drinking heavily in the hotel from 4p.m. till 10 p.m. before the incident happened.
Police sources claimed that the man was shot in error during a gun batttle with armed robbers in the hotel, a claim disproved by Okoro’s wife and relatives.
Even the hotel management told P.M.NEWS that there was no shootout between the police and robbers as claimed by the police and that they did not know their mission in the area that day.
The hotel sources, who pleaded for anonymity, said they only noticed the unusual presence of policemen which caused panic in their hotel.
One of the sources said that the policemen did not disclose their mission. Rather they were there having their drinks for several hours.
The source said it was later that they heard gun shots outside and residents including workers of the hotel started running for safety and that after some time, he got to know that they had shot and killed Okoro.
He insisted that there was no robbery incident in the area that day.
Okoro’s younger brother, Innocent, said he was informed about what happened and he immediately contacted other members of the family and they started searching from one police station to another for his corpse.
He said they went to many police stations and commands and to their greatest suprise, they all denied having anything to do with the incident.
Innocent said the search lasted for three days and there was no information whatsoever before they contacted a top police officer who made the police to open up.
He said the police then asked him to go to Yaba mortuary and search for Okoro’s corpse. And when he got there he discovered that the corpse was dumped there as an unidentified corpse.
He said the corpse was brought back to Ikeja General Hospital mortuary where he filled the necessary documents.
Innocent expressed shock about what happened and the way the police treated the whole matter by not even contacting the family because they knew he was an innocent resident they killed for no reason.
He also told P.M.NEWS that “the police admitted that Okoro was killed in error and asked us to come forward with the elders of the family.”
The late Okoro hailed from Imo State. He had a son called Divine.
Meanwhile the Officer In Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Superintendent of Police, Abba Kyari, has claimed that it was armed robbers that shot Okoro while they were trying to escape during an exchange of gunfire with the police.
Kyari said: “ On 8 March, at about 1p.m., I received an information that a gang of armed robbers who had planned to rob a bank on Isolo road ,Ajao Estate were approaching Lagos from Ogun State through Sango-Ota axis.
“Immediately I received this information, I alerted a team of crack detectives. We quickly moved and laid ambush at Abule-Egba Junction along Lagos /Abeokuta Expressway where the armed robbers were intercepted. After a gun battle with the robbers, seven of them were injured while two of them, identified as Olubode Mudashiru, 27, and Gbenga Joseph, 48, were arrested with bullet wounds.”
He explained that after the arrest, they received further information that one of the operational vehicles of the robbers, a golden colour Toyota Camry carrying three AK-47 rifles and two rocket launchers had driven through Abule-Egba junction towards Ajao Estate/Mushin area of Lagos.
I quickly deployed my men to that area where we were informed that the robbers had lodged at a popular hotel in Meiran area of Lagos, where they normally smoke Indian hemp and drink before embarking on operation. I quickly mobilised SARS operatives to the location.
“On sighting the patrol team, the robbers opened fire at us and we responded. During the gun battle, one of the robbers, Tunji Bamidele, 28, was arrested with one AK-47 rifle and a bag. Other gang members escaped along with two AK-47 rifles in their possession.
“ But one man, identified as Okoro, was shot dead by the robbers as they were trying to escape. We were on operation. We don’t know who is who. It was one of the suspected robbers, Bamidele, who told us that the person that was killed was not one of them.
“We quickly transferred the victim to a morgue, where I took charge of the mortuary bill. We were not the one that shot Okoro,” Kyari said.
According to him, during the operation, SARS recovered two AK-47 rifles, eight AK-47 magazines fully loaded, three locally made double barrel pistols, 65 live catridges along with two of their operational vehicles Toyota Sienna with registration number AKD 54 AG and Nissan Sunny with registration number BT 914 APP.
